Nah, fam. Ethiopian food, not Indian food. Wrong continent.
The bread is called Injera and traditionally is supposed to be gluten-free. It's made from teff flour. Unless they mix whole wheat into the batter, you should be fine. You can definitely check with them, they are pretty accommodating to dietary requests.
No, they are NOT BYOB.
Ask.....if you can't have peppers maybe you should cook at home instead.
there are sugar free items, but it depends on what you order.
Greta vegan options. And they are quite willing to help with optikns
There is no private parking lot for this place.
Yes it's BYOB
Great honey wine. Food was good but probly wouldn't go again. I wanted to try Ethiopian food and felt this was an excellent place to do so. The cuisine is just not my personal taste.
Great atmosphere, friendly service, delicious food. Fun!
Decent experience. However everything tastes similar on platters. Bread is very sour. Love the sanitary door openers in the restrooms.
Demera at home delighted our eclectic palates, though we admit we’re have few data points for Ethiopian. We ordered the Demera Messob and after agonizing over what options to choose, ~60-75 mins later (as estimated by their website) we had an incredible feast. The misir wot definitely had some heat, but the rich earthy flavors earned it the title of our favorite of the evening. Both the classic and teff (gluten-free) injera were awesome - remember to feed your friends! FYI, I was told all the messobs are naturally gluten-free). Re: the Tej honey wine, it tastes like a mead, but the hops add a sprucy herbal quality that wasn’t my cup of tea. Glad to have tried it, though.
This place is awesome! We particularly love the lentil sambusas and the Kik Alicha. I can't recommend Demera enough!
My first time trying Ethiopian food but it was amazing. Also right across the street from one of my favorite Jazz bars. Makes for a great one-two punch for a great date night
I love this place so much - not just for the delicious food and great prices, although those things are great. But the folks behind the counter are always friendly and I once saw one of them high-five a kid for helping to clean up a table. It was so cute and sweet, and I was happy I witnessed it. Lots of places have good food, but I like to give my money to good people, too.
I absolutely adore this restaurant. The food is so so good!! The injera crepe literally melts in the mouth and I cant rave enough about this place. We tried all their vegetarian options and meat and the lentils and curry's are so good. We loved to sit outside in the summer time weekends. A great place to share food with a large group of people.
I ordered delivery from Demera, and I was blown away by the customer service and the food! I ordered the Bayaytenu for 1 and the Appetizer Messob, and after stuffing myself I have enough leftovers for at least another meal or two and every bite was more delicious than the next. I'll definitely be returning to dine in when that becomes available again, as this is the perfect spot to bring your group of friends with dietary restrictions. Your vegan friend? So many options! Gluten free? Yep they've got lots of options too! Your friend who doesn't think it's a meal unless there's a pile of meat? You guessed it, they're set!
Very tasty dishes, yummy ingera, friendly staff. The tartar is fantastic.
Best Ethiopian food , hosting in Chicago. We were served by Haile , very nice person. We ordered chicken stew, lamb and sambosa platter . Coffee is a must try.
Wonderful Ethiopian experience in uptown. Great for groups with an expansive menu including tea, coffee and cocktails.
Vegan combination plate was great! And I don't normally like injera but theirs has such a nice fluffy texture, not rubbery at all like some places
Good customer service, good food 😊
Holy cow, this place changed my life 😂 I'd never tried Ethiopian cuisine before, and this place is easily in my top-5 of all-time favorite places to eat. Our waitress was the nicest woman ever, and the food was some of the tastiest I've ever eaten. If you're wondering if you should try this place out, YES, YOU SHOULD!
Never had Ethiopian before. Split the family platter with my parents and it was delicious!!
Would have given 5 if service was better..had to chase down waiter ...waited foreverrrrrrrrr
I've been waiting a long time to try Ethiopian food and unfortunately i was very disappointed. The bread you use to eat with is bitter and terrible. The food is lacking in taste. We tried a little bit and couldn't eat it at all. Had to go eat somewhere else.
Love the banquet hall seating and the music playing while we ate was amazing. Our server was perfectly attentive despite having a huge party to tend to (who also seemed happy).
Great service and polite and friendly staff. We had a great time sharing injera with friends. I would highly recommend this experience especially if you haven't tried Ethiopian restaurant before. Convenient location.
Highly recommend this place. Went on a Sunday afternoon and it was very slow so service was great. Ordered the meal for 2 that included 3 meat selections and 3 veggie selections! All of it was delicious and was more than enough, so much so that we had plenty of left overs to enjoy later. Would definitely come back!
I enjoyed the family style entree, the cozy restaurant and beautiful staff! The food was delicious and the 40 Springs cocktail should not be missed!
This was very authentic cuisine, served in a classically comfortable and typically American setting. There is a full bar available. Street parking is available, free on Sundays. The service was friendly and attentive, though the meal wasn’t speedily served. The appetizers did come very quickly, however. It wasn’t a long wait, at any rate. This place is: Highly Recommended. You’ll enjoy yourself!
Besides coffee served in a tiny cup the food was good. If you've never had Ethiopian food I'd suggest going for the beef and chicken dishes. Reason is vegetarian dishes including the bread have a sour taste to them which is not necessarily a bad thing. Enjoy!!
Nice try of Ethiopian food. It is a big meal and the taste is good.
How Demera doesn’t have a solid 5 star rating, I just do not understand. The food is amazing. My boyfriend and I couldn’t decide what to order. We told the waitress what we like, what we were leaning towards, and told her to surprise us. It was just amazing. We order takeout all of the time now because we loved eating at this restaurant so much. Try it. Get into it. Eating with your hands is a fun experience.
Amazing food at a good price. Service was a little slow, but in COVID times I don't mind at all.
Worst Ethiopian food that I have ever had. Shiro had so much salt that it was unrecognizable. Portions were very small. Way too much oil in the doro alicha On a positive note, the injera was very good
The food is delicious and the customer service is great.
It was the 1st place we brought my Grandson when he was adopted from Ethiopia the food is delicious the services is great
Very interesting cuisine and a good atmosphere. It was pretty busy considering we went on a Monday night. Everybody was really friendly and nice to us. Props to the staff. My only remark that i would give is that my cocktail was not shaken well enough, it was not cold at all. Also, just to let you guys know, most of the food is pretty spicy. But delicious.
Had lunch at this awesome place. The food is amazing, cooked perfectly with nothing amiss. Lots of vegetarian options as well as meet options. The staff was great, friendly and gave good introductions to the food on the menu. Will definitely be going to Demera again!
Very disappointed in the take out order. At 17 and 19 dollar meals, I would like a full meal and for the food to match the description. Our sides were literally like 2 tbsp of food. The chicken may have been sautéed with tomatoes, peppers and onions, but the dish only had chicken and onions. Very frustrating, our "snack " was tasty, but now we will actually have to get dinner from somewhere else.
Love the food here. I got the vegetarian comb👌👌👌. The kitfo was good too. Check it out
Excellent service and excellent food. It was a very pleasant experience.
First time I tried Ethiopian food. The stewed meats and vegetable a very good. The Injera (bread) which is used to eat everything is is different , it has a spongy texture but good with the stews and veggies.
Highly recommended this place. I have heard a lot about ethiopion food and finally tried this place to find out what the fuss is all about.I must say we all love the food, it was delicious. we were party of 7, they accomodated us very well. Server was informative and super nice to us, explained the menu and suggested to the shared style dinner which turned out to be really really good.we had Big serving of lentils, chicken, shrimp, collard green house salad with injera and it was enough for 7 people.they also served us tea at the end which was on the house, loved their gesture.Definitely recommend⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wonderful spicy tasty food !!! Ethiopian bread is one of the best I ever ate. Much more tasty if you try to eat with your hands !
Great food, good customer service...definitely recommend.
Best Ethiopian food in the city. Fantastic atmosphere and great service.
This was my first time here. Went with an Ethiopian friend and was blown away with the food. Amazing flavors and you get to eat with your hands. So much fun, I will be back.
Came here for dinner a few nights ago. We were seated immediately and got our food within about 10 minutes of ordering! Great selection of vegetarian options and large portions. We ordered the vegetarian for two and couldn’t finish it. Highly recommend and would definitely go back!
This is the first restaurant where I ever tried Ethiopian food. It did not disappoint! Everything was SO GOOD. Highly recommend!
Food and staff was amazing. Loved the experience.
This place was truly an amazing experience! The food was great and the service was phenomenal. Went there for a last minute quick lunch and ended up staying a couple hours! If I could have ordered and eaten everything on the menu I would have. I will be back most definitely. This is one of my choices for Mother’s Day!
An absolute delight- have had mixed experiences with Ethiopian and this place is so far beyond everything else I’ve had. The vegetable bayanetu was a revelation... just so delish! Upbeat fun atmosphere with great service. Treat yo self & check this place out!
Went for the 3 meat 3 veg platter and was not disappointed. Everything was delicious. Our server opened a brand new bottle of wine for my friend when she asked which one was freshest that night (Thursday). We didn't have a reservation and were seated at a small table next to the kitchen even though the restaurant was never more than half full. Overall 10/10 would go again, but make a reservation next time.
Fantastic place! Went here on a date and had a really good time. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is perfect! It does get crowded fast, so I recommend making a reservation if you want to go there during the weekend.
We ordered food for 10 people and it was amazing! In our dish, there was a wide variety of food, even fish! The bread was different, I liked it but not everybody did. The waitresses were very nice and helpful. By the way, it is not BYOB, just if anybody wonders.
This was my first time having Ethiopian Cuisine. Loved the idea of having everything from a single plate -people share a special bond when you are sharing the same plate. The curries were delicious the service was great.
